We had to work this weekend, because it is the Dragon Boat festival/holiday for the Chinese next week, meaning we have the next week off. Holidays and vacations work much differently here than they do back home. The kids will go to school for like nine days in a row, and then have four or five days off. In reality, they just move their weekend breaks to different times of the week so they get the holiday off, so they don't miss school, if that makes sense. When our group was informed of this earlier in the week, we found it rather odd to hear that the kids had to be in school from Sunday to Sunday, and we had to teach all of those days. It's been a long week, but it will be well rewarded by having the next one off.
Jenna and I went and watched the primary students' end of the year performances this morning, and man, were they cute. There were many groups, and some of the performances were the three little pigs, Snow White, an Angry Birds skit, sang Katy Perry's "Firework", etc. I was surprised to see many students in one of the classes that looked very familiar to my own. I later learned that we have about four students with older siblings that go to Kaiyin's primary school, so that was kind of exciting!
When the performances were over, Jen and I began walking back to our apartments, when we ran into Carmelo! I was quite surprised to see his face among the crowds of parents coming to watch heir kids sing and dance the day away. It was a pleasant surprise, but still a surprise. He came in and chatted with us in our apartments, and then we decided to take a little walk.
I wanted to show him the little pups I love so much, so we took a visit to the pet shop down the road. They now have baby white fluffy poodles, instead of just the brown ones! They're so precious, I just want to take so many home with me. Then I remember a small white poodle I used to know when I was young, and then I quickly retract my thinking. Baby poodles are cute while they're young, but well, they grow up and look a little mangy sometimes.
On our way back to the apartments, we stopped in at a little restaurant for a sweet treat, peanut butter pancakes! However, they weren't pancakes at all, really. They were basically deep fried pieces of bread with honey and peanut butter in the middle. They were wonderful alright, but probably something I shouldn't indulge in everyday.
On our walk back home, it kind of hit me that we only have two weeks left here. I seriously don't know what to think about it, emotions are running high in my head right now. There's just so much change that's happened while being here, yet I feel like I should be used to such big changes when looking back at my track record these past two years. I do love switching things up, but I also love having some things in my life for longer than I'm allowed. I figure I will just make the best of my remaining time here, and take the wonderful memories I've made with me and treasure them forever.
